Map idea
The map will have two different views, being local view, and global view. Local view will show the current area the player is in, and global shows the entire map from an aerial view. An area is defined as an area that share some similar characteristics. For instance, a player standing anywhere from the start of the game to Teplar village will see all of those areas in local map. A player standing in the swamp area will only see the areas for the swamp in local view and so forth. When it comes to how the player gets to view the map, there are 3 different ways to do it.
All the areas on both the local and global map already show, so the player knows what is ahead. The player has to discoverer each piece of the map, so the player cannot see Teplar Village on the map until they visit the area. (So pretty much what is like in Helmet Heroes). Lastly, the player cannot see anything on the map until they buy a map from an NPC, which will uncover everything for that area. For both the second and third option, the global map will update with the local map, so the swamp will not pop up on the global map until it is discovered.

Would this work?

I needed a visual on how to incorporate a map into a game. I personally think the whole buying a map thing shouldn't be done since it limits the map's accessibility. I think it should stick with being filled in for free.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is a pretty nice idea for a map. I'd like to make the map have some art detail as well in order to reflect the game world. So something sort of like the imagine below, but perhaps I could also combine it with your idea. I think the two would work nicely.
