Tumbleweed Desert (Ideas from AFSR and Myself)

Post by Flashlight237 » Fri Sep 17, 2021 9:32 pm

Okay, so I had the idea of a desert level for awhile now, but AFSR brought the idea of a desert level to my attention recently, so I'd might as well cover that base. Now then...

Basic Stuff

Let's start from the top: the tileset. Here's a rough concept for the desert tiles: all 256x256.:

Image

I say rough because in Robby's instructions, he told me that the ground tiles need to be textured. Here, the tan parts are for the sands of the desert itself while the green parts are for oases and river banks.

As for the level idea, well, since I'm pretty sure everyone's tired of every level looking like a maze full of tedious obstacles, how about I make this level more like every other 3D game desert level: A wide-open area with NO MAZE BULLCRAP!

Image

Yep! Because deserts naturally have little or no vegetation, GONE is the maze bullcrap! In comes an area where you can go wherever the he|| you want! No linear bullcrap!

Adding to that, it would be cool that, instead of trees (or cacti in this case), the border would be marked by reeeeeeally steep sand dunes that can't be climbed on top of. That bit came from Cyro, not me.

After that, we have another NPC: Desert People.

Image

They're yellow. I think the wide ears are meant to allow them to cool off in this case.

Also, here's a rough tumbleweed:
Image

And a rough pyramid:
Image

I mean pyramids are available as a collider in Unity, so a pyramid shouldn't be too farfetched to implement.

Oh! And here's some desert music. And yes, I've made sure they're royalty free. This one's for the desert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sc40MyNNvhY

And this one's for the pyramid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30sCS6_2CL4

I went with the 2nd song for the pyramid because I felt the song gave the pyramid a sense of mystique and wonder. As for the first song, well, it's fairly standard desert music. What more can you ask for? Yep. Eeeeeyep.

Mobs

Okay, now for the meat of this thing: the mobs. I've made 9 mobs. Two of them came from AFSR's concept while the other 7 came from my own wild imagination. Okay, here goes...

Sandshag

First is the sandshag.:

Image

Like the Batling in the Red Leaf Hills Caverns, the Sandshag would serve an environmental purpose. Gotta feed all the mobs in the desert, right? Now, here are the stats.

Name: Sandshag
HP: 64
Defense: 7
Power: 12
Weight: 75 lbs (pretty much like a Shagdaw or Hellshag)
Spawn Rate: 40 seconds
Description: Sandshags are basically like jackals and fennec foxes back in Earth. Sandshags have wide ears that they use to cool themselves off in the harsh desert environment. They aren't exactly much, though. The only really powerful Sandshag out there was a Sandshag I created named Anubi. But yeah, Sandshags mostly eat whatever they can get in the desert. You know, stuff like lizards, snakes, insects, arachnids... You get the drill. You may even catch them eating shrubs if they have to. Sandshags are kept as pets and ritual animals in the Desert Kingdom. Sandshags are mummified by the Desert People as offerings to the Egyptian god of embalming: Anubis. I dunno why they do that; but then again, if the Ancient Egyptians made it to this day, they likely would've invented national parks before Woodrow Wilson made them cool.

Now, for their drop pool.

Sandstorm

Next up is the Sandstorm:

Image

I would say these guys would spawn pretty frequently: I'd say 20-25 seconds per spawn. This is primarily because sandstorms are a common hazard in deserts. For real, tho.

Name: Sandstorm
HP: 250
Defense: 25
Power: 128 (Sand causes players to miss attacks for several seconds; think Sand Attack from Pokemon)
Weight: 3 lbs (based on the math done in this, a sandstorm has a density of 1.326 kg/m³: https://www.reddit.com/r/theydidthemath ... n_a_heavy/ )
Spawn Rate: 21 seconds
Description: Sandstorms are a common desert entity. They tend to move around flinging sand all over the place. If you get caught by a sandstorm, you're very likely to get sand in your eyes, and I'm not talking the Sandman kind. This is real sand, which will blind you and make you whiff your attacks. Sandstorm monsters primarily exist because they came from my own magical power. What can I say? I'm Moonchyllus: the creator goddess and goddess of nature. I can make whatever I want come to life. Hehe. Anyway, Sandstorms don't really need sustenance, especially since they just come and go. I hardly seen a Sandstorm naturally last longer than 15 minutes myself. Artificial methods like AFKing can make Sandstorms last longer, though. Just sayin'.

Now, for their drop pool.

Crocodile

This time, it's pretty much the most powerful animal we have in terms of bites: a crocodile.
Image

Yes, you can RIDE crocodiles:

Image

You can even ride one on the surface of bodies of water instead of sinking like a rock!:
Image

But for real, where are the water physics?

Of course crocodiles aren't exactly the kind of animals that would just gnaw at something, so here's a sketch of the death roll animation:
Image

Image

I made it about 16.5 feet. Comparing it to the Auroch Beetle, it would look like this: http://prntscr.com/13n47lw

No, I don't think it should be walking around in a square like most mobs. I think it should be standing still and waiting like crocodiles do in real life. Speaking of real life, since crocodiles like to bunch up together in real life for some reason, let's give the crocodiles TESLA CRAWLER DISEASE!:
Image

That being said, here is it's info.:

Name: Crocodile
HP: 960
Defense: 50
Power: 333
Weight: 1600 lbs (comparable to a crocodile of similar size)
Spawn Rate: 3 crocodiles per spawn cycle; 40 seconds
Description: Crocodiles are semi-aquatic reptiles found near lakes and rivers in Eliatopia. Like Earth crocodiles, the diet of Eliatopian crocodiles depends largely on their size. Baby crocodiles start off by eating insects and small fish. Juvenile crocodiles will eat prey such as squishers and larger fish. Sub-adults and small adult crocodiles will eat Swamp Crabs, Armed Dillos, and Shagdaws. Large adults, on the other hand, will eat large prey such as Grunts, Shellshockers, Great Frogs, and even Eliatopians. Thanks to the koala levels of stupidity exhibited by Eliatopians, Florida Man-level stories of Eliatopians being eaten by crocodiles are often found slipping under the radar of Xantis' watch. Opportunistically, crocodiles will eat the calves of Auroch Beetles and Gal Roaches. Thanks to their metabolism, crocodiles can go for a few months without food. While crocodiles are normally solitary, crocodiles may band together to protect their eggs and keep them from being eaten by Scorpees, Night Stalkers, Auroch Beetles, and Gal Roaches.

Antlion

Okay, next up, we have a grappler enemy: the Antlion:

Image

It shouldn't be too difficult to make a cone collider for the sand pits if you know where to look: https://www.google.com/search?q=cone+co ... nt=gws-wiz

Name: Antlion
HP: 1500
Defense: 45
Power: 275
Weight: 3000 lbs (Square-cubed law based on an antlion larva with a length of 1/2 an inch and a weight of 50 mg)
Spawn Rate: 78 seconds
Description: While adult antlions are pathetic to a point where squishers can eat them, the antlion larva is a force to be reckoned with. The antlion mainly preys on sandshags, but it may catch the occasional horse or camel. Antlion larvae like to hide in pits in the sand, which they use for shelter and as a trap. Antlion larvae are one of the leading causes of animal-related deaths on Eliatopians, killing around 1000 Eliatopians every year. Of course I would expect that figure to be higher than that given how stupid Eliatopians are, but I guess they aren't to big of a fan of desert environments. Anyway, when antlions become adults, they fly around, stopping whenever they can pollinate a Cactoron. Before they die, female antlions lay their eggs underneath Cactorons while the antlions keep their eggs cool until their dying moment.

Now, for their drop pool.

Cactoron

It ain't a desert without cacti, so I made a cactus monster: the Cactoron:

Image

It kinda looks like Sheldon J. Plankton with the way I colored him in, but cacti do have a sort of vivid dark-green color scheme, so whatever. This guy has a ranged attack it would use against enemy whipmasters and archers and a up-close attack against warriors and bored mages. That being said, here are their stats.:

Name: Cactoron
HP: 1600
Defense: 64
Power: 240
Weight: 2000 lbs (This should be accurate for a tall cactus)
Spawn Rate: 62 seconds
Description: Cactorons are, like Logons, living plants that I (Moonchyllus) created. Cactorons, like any cactus, have needles that they use to protect themselves against creatures trying to feed off them. Unlike cacti, however, Cactorons are active beings that can defend themselves by spraying their needles. One might compare that aspect of them to a porcupine, but no porcupine on Earth had ever tried that. While not as deadly as porcupine quills, Cactoron needles are still painful enough to make wannabe predators flee. Cactorons regenerate their sprayed needles so fast that you can see it with your own eyes. That's not mentioning the accuracy of their needle-spraying attack, in which case they usually hit their mark even on moving targets. Cactorons are resilient creatures as well; they can survive up to a few years without water. Cactorons farmed by the Desert People will develop fruits that, while larger, are similar in both appearance and taste to the fruits of the prickly pear. These fruits are often used in smoothies and candies.

Lizag

Now for the last mob that would sit outside the Pyramid: the Lizag!:

Image
Image

Yep! This guy is a Fire+Poison monster. This guy's bites induces both fire and poison damage. The Lizag would also have a fiery breath like the Mandrake, which does, well, normal fire damage. Mhmm.

Name: Lizag
HP: 2400
Defense: 72
Power: 285
Fire Power: 200
Poison Damage: 30
Poison Resistance: 15
Weight: 12500 lbs (I mean look at those things and tell me they wouldn't weigh that much.)
Spawn Rate: 84 seconds
Description: Scorpees are pretty powerful creatures, capable of feats of strength on par with the Gal Roach, but a Scorpee won't stand a chance against the Lizag. The Lizag is a powerful, venom-resistant monster that preys on Scorpees in the desert. While the Lizag's bites aren't as strong as a crocodile's bite, the Lizag kills its prey by using a burning venom. They also eat Xantis' forces due to their disdain towards Xantis, plus Lizags are capable of tearing Znakes apart to eat the oily meat within them. Fire runes are made out of the ground armor and bones of the Lizag, which are then molded and fired to give them their characteristic fire shape. Once fire runes are cooled off, they are then painted over with orange and yellow dye. During the mating season, male Lizags would wrestle against one another to gain the affection of the female. Newborn Lizags are born tiny just like newborn alligators, which may be subjected to predation by Scorpees.

Mummy Golem

Ah yeah. My first ever monster from when I started doing these things: the Mummy Golem.:

Image

He looks like Popeye in a way. These guys are fairly common inside the pyramid. Why wouldn't they? They're mummies. That being said, here are their stats.:

Name: Mummy Golem
HP: 360
Defense: 32
Power: 160
Poison Resistance: 9999 (Immune; come on; they're undead. You seriously think you can poison them?)
Weight: 500 lbs
Spawn Rate: 34 seconds
Description: Mummy golems are often found in pyramids. Mummified people are sometimes magically transformed into mummy golems to serve as guardians of ancient temples in the Desert Kingdom. Unlike real mummies, the mummy golems' wrappings are fairly loose for a mummy. Must be cartoon logic going against them. Anyway, when they find an intruder, they would go after them, often chasing them out of the tomb which they protect. Scarabs often avoid scavenging off mummy golems, primarily because of both of their respective protectorate duties.

Scarab

Okay, now for the Scarab.:

Image
Image

Scarabs are often venerated as the rising sun in Egyptian mythology. It was only natural to turn scarabs into guardians of the Pyramid. That being said, here's what I got.:

Name: Scarab
HP: 450
Defense: 100
Power: 250
Fire Power: 160 (Why not? Those things are supposed to represent the sun, so I would imagine them firing some sort of "sun ball" attack as one of their two moves)
Weight: 400 lbs
Spawn Rate: 62 seconds
Description: While Scarabs are significantly smaller than Auroch Beetles, they make up for it by being significantly stronger than Auroch Beetles. This strength allows them to roll up whatever they need moved out of their way into a ball. They don't eat much; just fecal matter, dead plant matter, and carrion. Scarabs are worshipped by the Desert People as the god Khepri, who is an aspect of the sun god: Ra. Like Shellshockers, Scarabs are biologically immortal and can only be killed by predators. Its durable exoskeleton makes it difficult to kill a scarab.

Kingscorpee

Hoo boy! I'm breaking out the big guns now! Y'all know how much I like the Scorpee. I made an even stronger Scorpee: the Kingscorpee!:

Image

I got real creative with this mob. I was intending to based this mob off Serqet: the Goddess of Healing and Magic. Because of this, I decided to go out on a limb to make the Kingscorpee an expert of magic along with its crazy-venomous stings.:

Image

It has a super powerful fire spell that deals twice its normal damage, it has the ability to heal itself by quite a bit (like the Night Stalker except better), AND it has a very creative spell in hand. That's right: it has a spell that allows the Kingscorpee to BYPASS PROTECTION FIELD! They say the best way to make a foe difficult to get creative, and by god, THIS is what I call creative!

Also, it'll be the first mob and the first thing ever to allow multiple people to ride it. I don't understand why picnic tables and benches don't allow two people to sit in the same seat. There's plenty of space for people to do so, so why not?

Oh! Forgot the parts:

Image

There... Anyway, here are its stats:

Name: Kingscorpee
HP: 3500
Defense: 78
Power: 305
Fire Power: 240
Poison Damage: 50
Weight: 4000 lbs
Spawn Rate: 120 seconds
Description: Kingscorpees are very powerful creatures just like the Scorpee. Along with its potent venom, the Kingscorpee is an expert in magic. It is capable of using potent magic and work its way around the defenses of wizards. Due to this level of expertise, the Kingscorpee is a creature representing the Egyptian goddess Serqet, who is the Goddess of poisons, healing, and magic. Of the four canopic jars used to store organs, Serqet is associated with the canopic jar containing the intestines. Kingscorpees are often given the intestines of sacrificed animals. Kingscorpees, like the Scorpee, are intelligent creatures. If I recall correctly, a Kingscorpee invented the sausage out of the intestines it was given. The Desert Kingdom's ruler, my sweet Diankhgemut, admired the Kingscorpee. Xantis tried to kill Diankhgemut, but before Xantis made the killing shot, a Kingscorpee jumped in and swatted Xantis away. It overpowered Xantis, netting Xantis his first defeat and forcing his forces to retreat from the Desert Kingdom.

Royal Guard

Here's Diankhgemut's Royal Guard.:

Image

These guys are, of course, guards of the Sand Kingdom where their pharaoh, Diankhgemut, rules. Here's what I got for them.:

b]Name:[/b] Royal Guard
HP: 120
Defense: 240
Power: 270
Weight: 160 lbs
Spawn Rate: 50 seconds
Description: Diankhgemut's guards are battleable only in the barracks of the Sand Palace. There, the royal guard engages in training regiments in order to prepare for war. Diankhgemut's guards are among the military forces that actively fight against Xantis' conquest. They are coached either by sand people generals or Kingscorpees. They are capable of using powerful attacks such as Power Smash in order to overpower their opponents. When the time comes, the royal guard will defend the Sand Kingdom against Xantis' forces once more.

Now, lastly, I made a mid-boss.

Mid-Boss: Diankhgemut

Basics

Yep. I made a pharaoh mid-boss. Her name is Diankhgemut.:

Image

Her design was meant to fit a real-life Egyptian mummy, which is why I DIDN'T give her a puppetlike appearance. She is heavily wrapped up and encased in a shroud, which would render her effectively limbless AND unable to talk without her trusty pet: Anubi. The death mask is meant to represent her face, which isn't a face a mortal would have. I gave her a cartouche just like one would with a real mummy, which has the glyphs for "Di," "Ankh," Geb's name in heiroglyphs, and "Mut." The name itself means "Given life by Mother Earth."

Here be her parts:

Image

Mechanics

Mechanically, she'll float around the arena. She won't teleport; she'll just move around. Her movement should be as free-flowing as a Sentry's movement, with the exception that she won't run away like a coward.

I had several moves for her: one where she uses Protection Field to defend herself against attacks. This version of Protection Field would have 1000 HP, but it would take 4x as much damage as Diankhgemut would.

Another move she would use is a physical attack where she whips her foes with bandages. Of course; what did you expect from a mummy.

One last move I thought of is a Sun Ball attack, which would function like the Spirit Bomb except Diankhgemut would throw a great fireball at the player that's as hot as the sun. This is based on the idea that pharaohs are a descendant of Ra (or the gods, whichever). The sun is the most venerated entity in Ancient Egypt, so it was only natural to give Diankhgemut a sun-based fire attack.

If you ask if she'll be unwrapped once defeated or if she'll fade into dust, the answer to that question is a big N O. What kind of uncreative nonsense is that? Instead, I've given her two different Defeat Sequences, which you'll see in the Lore section.

That being said, she'll also have her own dedicated partner: Anubi the Talking Sandshag!:

Image

Unlike every other shagdaw, which aren't any more powerful than a regular dog, Anubi is a powerful entity that commands the power of Anubis. Anubi could overpower a Lizag if he wanted to.

Now, I don't like putting bosses in without giving the boss some lore. I've asked five LGBT people for their opinions about the lore and all five of them said they were cool with how I wrote Diankhgemut. Without further ado, here's the lore.:

Lore

Thousands of years ago, Diankhgemut, whose name means "Given life by Mother Earth" as she was created by Moonchyllus, ruled the desert with a gentle but firm grip. Diankhgemut was a very beautiful girl who watched over her subjects: the Desert People. Diankhgemut, like her people, practiced Egyptian religion: a concept taught to her and the Desert People by the nature goddess: Moonchyllus. Not only was Moonchyllus Diankhgemut's mentor, but she was also Diankhgemut's lover. Moonchyllus had granted Diankhgemut eternal life, eternal beauty and so forth, all while Diankhgemut reciprocated the goddess' actions with a romantic date or even some time "in bed," if you get what I mean.

One day, Xantis and his army invaded the Desert Kingdom. Xantis barged into Diankhgemut's palace with his men. Xantis made it to Diankhgemut's bedchambers where he would witness the scene of Diankhgemut kissing Moonchyllus. Being the Green Hitler he was, Xantis homophobically found the sight disgusting, but he opted not to let that get ahead of him. He used an ancient spellbook to cast a curse on Diankhgemut, mummifying her like a real Egyptian mummy, death mask and all. When Xantis pulled out his trusty gun: the Bladed Ratcheter, he aimed it at Diankhgemut, readying the killing blow. However, Xantis' attempt to kill Diankhgemut was cut short by a Kingscorpee, who swatted away Xantis like a ragdoll. Forced to retreat, Xantis vowed to return to the Desert Kingdom to get rid of Diankhgemut and conquer the Desert Kingdom.

Uncertain about Diankhgemut's safety, Moonchyllus whisked Diankhgemut from her bedchambers. She had used her powers to build a pyramid for Diankhgemut. Moonchyllus took Diankhgemut into the pyramid she had built, then conjured a sarcophagus in Diankhgemut's image. She put Diankhgemut into her tomb, where Diankhgemut would rest for eternity. Knowing Diankhgemutwasn't able to speak, Moonchyllus gave Diankhgemut one last gift: a melanistic talking sandshag of her creation named Anubi. The sandshag would translate everything Diankhgemut would try to say, which allowed her to continue to communicate with the Desert People to this day.

Boss Defeat Scene A (this one sets the tone more):

When the player defeats Diankhgemut, Diankhgemut would slump over in defeat. Her wraps have not loosened a single bit. Diankhgemut explained to the player that the wraps came from a curse laid onto her by Xantis. The only way to remove the curse is to kill Xantis. Until then, she is stuck. And so, the player set forth to continue his journey to defeat Xantis.

Boss Defeat Scene B (this one's funnier):

So, once "defeated," Diankhemut would start wobbling back and forth either tired or dizzy after such a beating. Either way, after some wobbling she ends up falling over... into a sarcophagus that pops out from out of nowhere, which then make her moan in confusion... before promptly sealing up-! After a bit she squeaks and groans as Anubi then hops onto the sarcophagus and says: "Her highness said 'No fair! I just let you win! Give me 12 minutes to catch my breath in this sarcophagus and I'll show you! I am a force to be reckoned with! So uhh... Think you can stay there for twelve minutes please..? Hello..? Intruders..? Awww...!'"

Summary

In short, I've made a mummy mid-boss for the desert area who is Moonchyllus' girlfriend and was intended to represent a mroe real mummy. Oh, and Anubi talks and translates Diankhgemut's moans and grunts. Yep.

Conclusion

With that, my huge desert area project is completed. Hoo boy. Who wouldn't want a desert area after the concept got skipped over in HH? Yep. Hoo boy, that was a doozy, but I hope you like it, Rob.

What can I say? The best armor set in the game that has the whole "ancient royal guard" thing going on here is the Relic set.

Thanks. It's nice hearing that from you. I tried to account for spawn rate when doing the provisional drop tables for these mobs. I know you always wanted drops to work in a similar manner.
