Hardening Pricing

Post by Flashlight237 » Thu Sep 23, 2021 10:11 am

Okay, so while Sharpening does the job of upgrading weapon power (and thus overall attack power) by 10%, Hardening is a whole nother ball game. I'll once again bring up my analysis on hardening.

Let's say you have a full Wrangler set. Each piece has a defense of 100, with the boots having a defense of 50. This would give the Wrangler set the following defense value:

100+100+100+50=350

Like every other rune, Hardening Stones can only be used on one piece of equipment. Thing is with Hardening Stones, the increase feels pricier compared to other enchantments. The closest weapon I can find to a Wrangler set price-wise ($899958) is the Alloy Grape Bow, which is two-handed (obviously) and a power of 108. It would normally cost $906520. To sharpen the Alloy Grape Bow just once, you would need $273091, and that would give it and the player 10%-ish more power. Easy said, easy done.

Now, let's harden the Wrangler Helmet. Hardening stones promise a 10% defense increase, right? Well, to harden the Wrangler Helmet, you would need $290346. Let's do the math and see how much that $290k increases defense by.:

360/350=1.028571429

Only 2.857%. That's without accessories, which would skew things further whether you're wearing a plain ol' scarf or a pair of Mech Wings (currently the most defensive accessory at 165. Now, the skewing resulting from the scarf would be virtually insignificant, but if I were to have a player wear Mech Wings with the Wrangler set... Hoo boy...

100+100+100+50+165=515

515+10=525

525/515=1.019417476

If a player were to wear full Wrangler gear and a pair of Mech Wings, hardening the Wrangler Helmet would only increase his defense by 1.942%.

Not really gonna bother with the boots because it's already very apparent that they're more worth hardening than the other set pieces of a set. Just from the fact that boots almost always have half of the stats of any set piece, the price difference between boots and armor pieces of the same set are a whopping 7.835362381x difference between the boots and the armor pieces.

I'd rather keep this simple because not even calculus is going to accurately represent what is needed to make things truly fair. Instead, let's go for a simple yet fair price change in hardening (because hardening doesn't even increase ANY of the other stats of a piece of armor). Simply put, just take the entire hardening price formula, put it in between parentheses, and divide the entire parenthesized formula by 4. That way, at the very least hardening will be somewhat worth the upgrade and there won't be any headaches on the developer's side of the deal.

But yeah, there's that.
