Shield Reflect is taking a huge % of XP away

So I played an entirely all defense knight to level 25ish and my experience was largely mired by one major issue: XP was actively being stolen from me by one of my largest sources of damage- shield reflections.
I understand that if I stood there and reflected mobs to death I could AFK grind. I know that's why reflect was probably nerfed this way, but I think it needs to be done differently.
If you have low offensive stats and a shield you can expect to lose half or more of the xp from a moderately long fight and even more on tougher fights. If you reflect a mob and it dies instantly? No xp at all. This is because as far as I can tell XP is shared between all entities that have done damage to a mob. So if my shield does all the damage?... It steals all the xp. Or maybe the monster does, because it's technically damaging itself? I digress.
The only way for me to gain xp is to unlearn the skill entirely or take my shield off and dual wield. Its that bad. Its a handicap ontop of a handicap in a case like mine with no offensive stat points to speak of.
I wanted to play as the best tank possible. My armor was over 28k with rage running and level 10 gear. I thought reflect would be my saving grace- that maybe it would scale with my defense or my shield's stats to give me an edge, given my lackluster offense, but instead it was the nail in the coffin for the playstyle.
I would also like to just add briefly that melee weapons are also much harder to use to fight than wands, bows and guns because you step forward slightly with each attack. This step pushes you past the monster and you have to run away and turn around. This lowers your DPS because you arn't attacking anymore while you reposition. And this is all while melees also have to be able to dodge- but the melee step animation locks you in place too so you can't move until it finishes. This means in order to perform well we have to position ourselves in spots where either the environment or the monsters body will stop us from moving forward. I'd recommend removing the forward motion entirely.
Let me know if you'd like recommendations for shield-war skill trees.
